At E3 Microsoft announced a brand new incentive for those of us that purchase Xbox Live Gold month after month. This feature is ‘Games with Gold’ where for an entire month Xbox Live Gold subscribers get the chance to download a two games for free. The first unofficial “Games with Gold” game was Fable 3 that was available for free for the entirety of June. Now we’re in July Microsoft have announced the first official game available for free, the main thing is, it’s not Assassin’s Creed II or Halo 3 as we were lead to believe.
At Microsoft’s press conference they said “and to kick off that program I’d like to share just two of the titles we’re going to offer over the next few months – Assassin’s Creed two, and Halo three” were we wrong to believe that this meant both Assassin’s Creed II and Halo 3 were going to be the first games to be released for free? According to Major Nelson we are.
Larry Hryb (a.k.a. Major Nelson) tweeted the following tweet yesterday which quashed the idea that ACII and Halo 3 were to be the first games in the ‘Games with Gold’ offer:
FAQ: “Halo 3” and “Assassin’s Creed II” were mentioned as part of the program – no date was given for their release http://mjr.mn/11SSgBW
So there we have it, the first official game in the ‘Games with Gold’ offer is in fact Hidden Path Entertainment’s tower defense game, Defense Grid: The Awakening, which will be available for free from July 1-14.
