Blackberry have announced that BBM for Android and iOS will be receiving some big updates in 2014, one of which is the ability for users to make free voice calls via the service to any other BBM user worldwide bringing BlackBerry Messenger up to date with the likes of Skype, WhatsApp, and Google’s own Hangouts.

Along with the free voice calling, Blackberry have also announced that Android and iOS users will finally be able to join in BBM Channels, BlackBerry’s chat room-like feature, giving users the chance to talk with people who share similar interests by subscribing to corresponding channels.

Finally BlackBerry announced that sharing voice snippets, photo’s, and location will be added to the app as well as a bucket load of new emoticons to boot.

BlackBerry are currently beta testing the app for Android, iOS, and BlackBerry 10 with the release expected in the next few months, “they’ll be here before you know it.” writes Head of Product Management for BBM, Sean Hungerford, on the BlackBerry Blog.
